Solo-builder AI hackathons where the theme drops at kickoff
Hackyard runs small, capped AI hackathons for solo builders.
Each event is a Yard. The theme stays secret until kickoff, then you build solo for the week with any AI model you like. When building closes the community votes, and the counts stay hidden until the very end so momentum never snowballs. On Sunday a champion gets crowned.
Yards run on a set rhythm. Build Monday, vote over the weekend, crown Sunday, twice a month. It is free to join and free to build.
Ship something real and it lives on your builder profile forever. Earn badges, climb the leaderboards, and scout new builders in to level up your Scout rank from bronze to gold.
No teams, no funding, no gatekeeping. Just you, a blank screen, and a week to build something worth voting for.

Hey everyone, maker here. I built Hackyard because most hackathons reward teams, prep, and hype more than the actual building. Hackyard flips that. The theme stays secret until kickoff, you build solo for the week with any AI model you like, and the community votes with counts hidden until the end so nothing snowballs early. Free to join, free to build. This 2.0 is everything I have learned running the first Yards. Would love your honest feedback, and if you are a solo builder, come build in the next one.
So, I'm pretty normal.
Great site. I've been having a great time using it.

The reigning champ himself 👑 Thanks Sean. Splat Lab earned that Yard #2 crown. Can't wait to see what you build next.
Great site. I've been having a great time using it.

Appreciate that, Owen. Glad it's clicking for you. Jump in a Yard whenever you're ready 🙌

Keeping vote counts hidden until the end is a nice touch. A surprise theme and a one-week deadline sound like a fun way to finally finish a side project. Have any builds from previous rounds turned into ongoing products?
Building AI Tools + Digital Products:
Thank you, Ana. Yes, they have. Yard #2's winner, Splat Lab, is a no-code game builder for kids that's still being built out at splatlab.games, and Yard #1's winner turned their build into a live Chrome extension. A one-week deadline is a great way to finally start something you actually keep going.
Hiding vote counts until the end is a smart mechanic - visible early counts basically decide the winner in most community votes. The solo-builder cap plus a secret theme also fixes the two things that make big hackathons unfair: team size and prep time. How do you handle judging quality when entries span totally different categories, or is it pure community preference?
Building AI Tools + Digital Products:
Great question. It's pure community preference, no judges and no categories to game. One vote per builder, and since everyone builds the same theme, people are really voting on who executed the idea best. Counts stay hidden until close, so it rewards the build, not early momentum.

Love this idea. As a solo builder myself, the secret theme and one-week deadline really appeal to me. No teams, no hype, just build something real and let the work speak for itself. That’s a great format.
Building AI Tools + Digital Products:
That's exactly the spirit, Perry. Let the work speak. Would love to see you in one, the next Yard kicks off Monday.
Love the style of the website. The yards are a nice way to keep builders creating new stuff.
Building AI Tools + Digital Products:
Thanks Javier, that means a lot. Keeping builders shipping on a steady rhythm is the whole idea, and I'm glad the design lands too.
A nice place to have all essential tools together, very useful

The hidden-theme and blind-voting mechanics solve two common hackathon problems: pre-built entries and early vote momentum. How do you handle judging ties when voting closes, and do builders receive structured feedback they can use on the next Yard?
Building AI Tools + Digital Products:
Good questions. Voting is pure community preference, one vote per builder, counts hidden until close. Ties are rare at this size, and if two ever tied I'd sooner crown both than invent a tiebreaker. Feedback today comes from the community through votes and comments on each build, and a more structured feedback pass is on my list.
The secret-theme + blind-voting combo is a smart fix for the usual hackathon meta where teams prep early and early votes snowball. As a solo builder working on AI creative tools, a capped one-week Yard with a public builder profile feels like a much healthier way to ship and get real feedback. Curious whether past Yard winners tend to keep iterating after the crown, or mostly treat it as a one-off sprint.
Building AI Tools + Digital Products:
Really glad it resonates. And yes, they tend to keep going. Yard #2's champion is still building Splat Lab (splatlab.games) well after the crown. The public profile helps, since every build stays on your track record, not just the winner's.
great site for use check it

Thanks for checking it out 🙏
Love the surprise-theme format for solo builders. Timing a theme drop at kickoff keeps the focus on shipping, not over-planning. How do you handle judging across time zones?
Building AI Tools + Digital Products:
Good question. Time zones barely matter here, because a Yard runs a full week rather than a same-day sprint. Kickoff and the deadline are fixed times, but you build on your own schedule across the week, and voting stays open all weekend. So wherever you are, you get the same days to build and the same window to vote.
Im very happy i came across this
