The hands-on AI trainer that refuses to write your code
4.8(6)36Development ToolsOnline LearningArtificial Intelligence
CodeTrain is a hands-on AI trainer for developers. Instead of writing code for you, it turns any question, repo context, or onboarding task into a short lesson on your own codebase: two to six small steps, each one typed by you in an editor with an instant run/test loop. The tutor grades every step, asks Socratic questions when you miss, and shrinks the step when you're stuck. Pro adds repo mode with a single reviewable patch-back of the code you wrote; Team adds ramp dashboards and onboarding journeys. Free tier runs in the browser, ten sessions a month, no card.

I came up with CodeTrain as the natural solution to help fill the knowledge gaps AI coding tools can create. Skill atrophy related to AI tool usage is real, and tools like CodeTrain can help real dev teams use AI tools to accelerate their workflows while still understanding the code.
I like the idea of helping developers learn instead of just generating code automatically. A few real-world project examples on the landing page would make the value even clearer.

Yes, learning is paramount to how our brains are wired! Awesome feedback, will take this into consideration
The step-by-step approach is a strong answer to skill atrophy from AI coding tools. Keeping developers in the editor and grading each small change makes the learning loop concrete. A short sample lesson on the landing page would make the experience even easier to understand before signing up.

Thank you for the feedback, taking it to my notebook!
Simple and practical for learning code.

Think of it as a strict but caring personal tutor: miss a step and it fires Socratic questions to make you think; get stuck and it shrinks the step until you can win. Ten sessions on CodeTrain will teach you more than a hundred sessions of blindly copying AI output

Love this, so true!
Shrinking the step when someone gets stuck is the part most tutoring tools skip. Does the tutor grade against the repo's own tests in repo mode?

Interesting quesiton, the lesson is built from your actual code and every step can execute in the browser. What it doesn't do today is run your existing test suite as the gate. Grading is per-step criteria the tutor authors based on the repo, checked against what your code does when it actually runs. I do like this general idea though and will at least assess if/how/where a feature like this could fit into CodeTrain.
The insistence on having developers type and test each small step is a thoughtful way to preserve understanding while using AI. The repo-mode reviewable patch also sounds useful for keeping changes inspectable. How do you handle projects whose existing test suite is incomplete or slow?

Thanks and good question. The short answer is that we don’t run your full test suite, so its state doesn’t affect grading. In repo mode, the tutor creates step-specific criteria from your repo, and it only checks the code written for that step in a sandbox. That means grading works the same whether your suite has 90% coverage or none. It also avoids a bigger issue: in a multi-step lesson, intermediate states would often fail a whole-repo test suite for reasons that have nothing to do with whether the learner understood that specific step. What matters most is that you get a clear record of what someone wrote on their own versus where they needed help. Your CI still matters for the final patch review, but that happens separately at your pipeline’s pace. CodeTrain isn’t trying to replace CI.

The instant run/test loop after each small step is what makes this click typing the code yourself with immediate feedback beats passively accepting AI suggestions. urious how the tutor handles repos with weak test coverage: does repo mode still grade steps reliably there?

Since the tutor can grade against real code execution, it makes the grading as accurate as any sandbox environment that actually can run code. I would be willing to bet CodeTrain could even assist developers in understanding any gaps in their existing test coverage in a way they walk away being able to build more coverage themselves!

I love this. As a software developer i can feel my skills eroding with AI, think this would really help maintain them before it's too later

Right! and if you need the free tier is genuinely useful with 10 lessons per month
Just giving it a try—I realized it’s what I wanted to build before.
Local-first execution is the detail I like most — code never leaving the machine on the free tier, and even Pro just sending small prompt snippets rather than the whole repo. That's a real point of difference from most "paste your code into our AI" tools, especially for teams onboarding on proprietary codebases.

For sure, pairing the local agent with BYOK, the code and prompts that leaves your companies perimeter is already controlled by your existing policies and API provider. Use the completely free skill and you never even need to go to our site ;)

Just recently added some repo examples on the front page, you need an account to click and execute them, but are good examples. There is also a live demo with real javascript exection on the front page now too!

#1 of the day on Fazier!!!! (post is a little late I know) Thanks to everyone who checked it out. If you have not, the thing you can now do without an account is a full lesson on the landing page: codetrain.ai/#try
